Sun StorageTek T9940 Drives
StorageTek T9940 Drives
Overview
Get ahead. Empower business continuity. Enhance data protection. The Sun StorageTek T9940B tape drive brings uncompromised value by affordably and reliably storing greater amounts of historical data for critical business applications.
At A Glance
- Dramatic capacity and performance levels help to cost effectively deal with rapidly rising data volumes while ensuring less disruption and increased protection of critical information
- Minimized cartridge mounts and fewer cartridges to manage improves automation efficiency and increases productivity
- Cost savings results from fewer drives being required, reduced SAN complexity and simplified management
Designed For You
- High-volume archiving, backup and disaster recovery applications such as
- Real-time weather data and forecasts
- Scientific applications like medical imaging
- Film data in the entertainment industry
Be in the driver"s seat as data volumes grow
Store more in less time to meet shrinking and batch and backup windows.
Do more with less cost
High-capacity T9940B tape drives do the work of multiple typical midrange drives – minimizing extra hardware, reducing SAN complexity and simplifying management.
Features and Benefits
As application demands cause backup windows to disappear and downtime costs increase, the T9940B tape drive helps IT departments to achieve faster backup and restore performance, cost effectively.
Key Benefits
- Supports top-line business growth by affordably and reliably storing greater amounts of critical business data.
- Data can be simultaneously vaulted to remote sites for recovery in case of disaster.
- Reduces total cost of ownership by storing data on high-performance, capacity-centric tape instead of higher-cost disk or less-efficient tape.
Reduce complexity and simplify SAN management
Expand compatibility
The T9940B simplifies storage management and integrates easily with existing mainframe and open systems platforms and applications. It supports multi-platform connectivity, including native FICON, ESCON and Fibre Channel.
Leverage existing IT infrastructure
The T9940B provides backward-read compatibility with 9940A cartridges. It can rewrite the cartridges with three times more data, for extended investment protection.
Facilitate compliance with regulatory demands
Integrate the T9940 with VolSafe media cartridges and the result in a cost-effective, highly reliable archiving solution that helps address the most stringent electronic storage regulatory and legal requirements, including those of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Improve availability and reliability while increasing productivity
Keep up and running
Like all Sun StorageTek enterprise-class T-series tape drives, the T9940B is designed exclusively for high-duty cycles in automation environments. It delivers exceptional reliability in even the harshest operating conditions.
Increase productivity
The high-capacity T9940B tape drive minimizes cartridge mounts, requires fewer cartridges to manage for disaster recovery and improves automation efficiency. Store more data in less time to meet shrinking batch and backup windows.
Key Specifications
- Store up to 200 gigabytes of uncompressed data on a single cartridge at performance rates as high as 30 megabytes per second
- Single reel form factor with a leader block along with heavy-duty shell are designed for high reliability
- Tape media investment is protected by re-using existing T9940A-written media
- Supports Sun’s StorageTek VolSafe secure media technology providing a non-erasable, non-rewritable tape media for archiving critical data

Notes |

Notes | * The actions of the tape drive can be divided into four distinct phases: Phase 1: Load time — the amount of time required to insert a cartridge in the drive, load the tape and prepare to read, write or search. Phase 2: Average file access time — the amount of time required to search from the beginning of the tape to the midpoint; does not include load time. Phase 3: Maximum rewind time — the amount of time required to rewind the tape from the end to the beginning of the tape. The average rewind time is the time to rewind a tape from the midpoint to the beginning, i.e. one-half of the maximum rewind time. Phase 4: Unload time — the amount of time required to eject the cartridge from the drive. |
